The ArcLight was created by the University of St Andrews Global Health Implementation team in Scotland.
Lead ophthalmologists Dr Andrew Blaikie and Dr Iain Livingstone partnered with engineers to build a pocket-sized, solar-powered scope that could match £500 devices, yet thrive in low-resource settings.
The project runs as a social enterprise: sales fund ongoing research plus hands-on training for clinicians across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Classic scopes are bulky, metal-clad and packed with replaceable bulbs & batteries—costly to build and to maintain. ArcLight flips that script:
- Frugal engineering: a single precision LED array and flat-pack polymer body keep manufacturing costs low.
- No consumables: integrated solar panel + USB-C cell means no batteries or pricey halogen bulbs to replace.
- Social-enterprise model: profits from higher-income markets cross-subsidise distribution & training in low-income regions—so you pay less, and somebody else gains sight-saving tools.
